**Note - There will be no weekday Masses for the coming week as Fr. Dave will be at the Priests’ Institute.  However, there will be a communion service on Friday at 8:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s.

Text Box: “The news this week is, of course, that I’ll be gone to the annual Priests’ Institute. Every year the priests of the Jeff City Diocese gather with Bishop Gaydos at the Lake of the Ozarks (rough I know) for workshops, discussions, and fellowship. One of the topics is the new Mass translations. I don’t know how many have heard that all the Mass prayers have been re-translated from the official Latin. That will mean that our communal prayers will have a different sense and feel to them. For instance, the response to ‘The Lord be with you’ will be: And with your Spirit! These translations are designed to be more faithful to the originals and better, more prayerful, English. Of course while these new translations have been approved, they will not go into effect for more than a year (November 2011), while new liturgical books are printed and education/catechesis about them takes place. We should certainly think about reviving a liturgy committee to assist me in implementing these coming changes. Anyone interested should let me know.
“So there will not be Mass this week. St. Mary’s will have a communion service on Friday morning.
“I’ll be back on Friday afternoon and the new handbell choir was so anxious not to miss a week of practice, there will be a rehearsal on Friday evening at 7. Anyone interested is still welcome to come.”...Fr. Dave

Jerry & Clarine Means’ 60th Wedding Anniversary - Jerry & Clarine Means will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday (Oct. 10). There will be a special Mass at 11:00 a.m. (all are invited to this Sunday Mass) and an open house in Most Pure of Mary parish hall from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

PSR News - On Wednesday, October 13, there will be no afternoon PSR classes.  Evening PSR classes will meet as usual.  Also, please remember to return the PSR family registration form and the medical information form.

Action Requested by MO Catholic Conference - On October 20, the state of MO is scheduled to carry out the execution of Roderick Nunley.  Catholic teaching opposes the use of the death penalty because it disregards the sanctity of life and promotes revenge as a principle of justice. As Catholic citizens you can call on Governor Nixon to grant mercy to Roderick Nunley and stop his execution. Email constitservices@mo.gov or call 573-751-3222.  Issues to raise in your message: 1)  Mr. Nunley pled guilty, thereby taking responsibility for his actions and was willing to accept a sentence of life without parole for his part in the murder. However, the prosecutor did not agree to a plea agreement in this case as he had done in other murder cases with more heinous circumstances. Mr. Nunley was sentenced to death by a judge, without the benefit of a jury trial.  2)  The death penalty disregards the sanctity and dignity of human life. The common good of the State would be better served if the cycle of violence of executions be broken and a commutation be granted.  Also, on Tuesday, October 19, vigils and prayer services will be held in cities across the state. At these services, Missourians will remember victims of violent crime & their families, as well as families with loved ones on death row, including Roderick Nunley's family and children. The MCC encourages Catholics to participate in an event near their location.  (Jefferson City: prayer service, 10:45 p.m., St. Peter's Catholic Church; in chapel.  Vigil, 11:00 p.m. until 12:01 a.m., 207 W. High St. across from Supreme Court. More info: Rita Linhardt, 573-635-7239).

! Congratulations! ! to Jerry and Clarine Means who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday!  May God bless you!
