“Advent is again upon us. This Season is given to us to remind us that if we truly want Christ to come again into our hearts and into our world at Christmas we need to prepare. So the question becomes: How will I prepare to truly celebrate Emmanuel’s coming? I pray we will all make some effort to use this season well. The Word Among Us booklets are again available for December. If you use them, please take one again. For others this Advent might be a good time to begin using them. There is also the shorter version: Five Minutes with the Word for everyone. We should all try to at least make the effort to use this each day. And for all who have e-mail, either on your computer or smart phone, I highly, highly recommend that you sign up for Best Advent Ever, from They promise a daily reminder of the season delivered right to your computer or phone. It will only take a moment to check it out or delete it.
“May your Advent be filled with many Blessings.”…Fr. Dave

Bishop’s Advent Pastoral Letter
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With our Thanksgiving holiday still fresh in our minds, let us continue to be grateful for all the things the Lord has done for us as we begin this New Year of Grace.  The Church continues to celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life, and prepares to enter into the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council.  Our Blessed Mother is the one who reminds us in her Magnificat that God “has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.” (Lk 1:50)
Here in the Diocese of Jefferson City, we began our local celebration of the Holy Year of Mercy with the opening of the Holy Door at the Cathedral of St. Joseph on the Solemnity of Christ the King.  It is the desire of the Holy Father that each Diocese celebrate the Jubilee Year in conjunction with Rome, to make visible the universal communion of the Church, and in keeping with the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, to manifest the merciful love of God the Father to the whole world.
The season of Advent is certainly a time when all of us can experience the mercy of God at work in our lives.  Many of you will likely practice works of mercy this month, as you offer gifts of love to those who are suffering or in need.  It is my hope that many will participate in the Rite of Reconciliation this month, and feel the peace and joy that the forgiveness of God brings to those who desire it.  In each of these ways, we prepare our hearts to receive the greatest gift of all, the gift of God’s Only Begotten Son.  O Come, Emmanuel!
With my best wishes and personal regards, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ…Most Reverend John R. Gaydos, Bishop of Jefferson City
