“Today we begin our Season of Advent! We spend these next four weeks preparing for the feast of the beginning of our salvation – the coming into the world of our Lord and Savior. Will we prepare well? There is much going on that could detract us from the true meaning of the season, but it need not be so. With the right intention, always remembering the real reason why we are doing something we can make our December activities truly Advent events, preparing our hearts to welcome Christ. Simply do all, intentionally, for Christ, and out of love for Christ. At the same time we can do that better by being sure we do something just for Christ – take some extra time, even just a few minutes, of prayer or reflection, spend some time in quiet, or visit a church. God will not be outdone in generosity, whatever we give to him will be repaid a hundredfold.”…Fr. Dave

Bishop’s Advent Pastoral Letter
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On this final Sunday in November, we celebrate the beginning of a new year of grace as we enter into the season of Advent.  Looking back upon all the recent violence and suffering that has been experienced both in foreign countries and within our local communities, there is a renewed longing for the coming of God’s Kingdom.  We place our trust in the Lord’s promise that He will return in glory at the end of the age, and we wait in joyful expectation for His love to be born once again in each of our hearts.  So we welcome these days of Advent by echoing the cry of the Church throughout the centuries:  Maranatha! “Come, Lord Jesus!”
These days of Advent also provide us an opportunity to focus more deeply on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  While she joyfully awaited the birth of Jesus, Mary did not isolate herself, but shared with those around her the message of hope announced by the angel Gabriel.  As Pope Francis wrote in his encyclical Evangelii Gaudium, “She is the woman of prayer and work in Nazareth, and she is also Our Lady of Help, who sets out from her town “with haste” (Lk1:39) to be of service to others.”
Advent is a wonderful time to pay a visit to our neighbors who are homebound, who struggle with infirmities, or who find their faith difficult to practice.  By meditating on the love God has for us, in imitation of Mary Immaculate, we will find the inspiration to share ourselves with those who thirst to be loved.
With my best wishes and personal regards, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ…Most Reverend John R. Gaydos, Bishop of Jefferson City
