++ Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is Saturday, December 8, and is a holy day of obligation.  Masses for this holy day are being offered at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 7, at MPH and at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, at Assumption.

Advent is upon us. We rejoice in the nearness of our Lord and King. This season is given to us as a gift. How will we use it? It seems too often that we are at war with the world. Indeed we stand in contrast to the world. As the world is celebrating a secular Christmas now, a Christmas without Christ, we are preparing our hearts to welcome anew the newborn king. When the world finishes Christmas on December 25, we are just beginning a time of joyful celebration of the coming of our Lord and Savior into the world to redeem us. Are we to fight against the world? Perhaps a better way is to try and transform the world with a heart full of Christmas Joy. If we decorate, let us prepare our houses and hearts to welcome Christ. When we shop, let us remember the person for whom we buy the gift as a true gift from God to us. As we celebrate with friends and family, let us rejoice in Christ in them, and truly love them as Christ. In this way we let the season draw us always closer to Christ, who is truly Emanuel – God with us.

Community Advent Service – Sunday, December 2, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Deer.

Seminarian Education Endowment Fund - Can you help? With only $20,000 more in donations, we will receive $50,000 from the Catholic Extension Church Society to benefit the education of our future priests.  Here is the challenge: for every $1,000 gift to the Seminarian Education Endowment Fund (SEEF) before December 31, 2012, Catholic Extension will match $1,000.  Checks can be made out to SEEF and mailed to Stewardship Office, Diocese of Jefferson City, 2207 W. Main Street, Jefferson City, MO 65109.  How will you benefit from making this sacrificial gift? Your donation is tax-deductible and you will have the joy of being a founding member of this vital endowment. Most importantly, you will be ensuring that all men who are called to the priesthood are able to answer that call. God bless you for helping us meet the match. Bishop’s Advent Pastoral Letter
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During this Year of Faith we begin the glorious time of Advent.  It allows us to wait in hope, pray in faith, and approach with awe our God whose love for us came down from heaven to be among us.  During this new liturgical year we recall our deep longing to encounter the truth and power of Jesus Christ more and more fully each day.  Our meditation during this time allows us to bind our hearts to the humility of the Bethlehem stable praying without ceasing for God to bring peace to the world and to our families.  These days also remind us of our commitment to evangelize a troubled world as well as to be faithful to the variety of ways we are called to share with the poor.
I wish you every blessing in the celebration of these Advent weeks.  May you know the joy of Christ’s presence and promise in all things.
With my best wishes and personal regards, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ

Most Reverend John R. Gaydos,

Bishop of Jefferson City
