“We begin our first week of Lent together. We have celebrated Mass, the real sacrament of reconciliation. Christ has reconciled us to the Father. Lent asks us to look at the world with eyes of faith. We would say to look at the reality of the world, and our place in relation to God. From that perspective, the reality is that we are sinners; that we fall far short of the perfection to which we are called. The reality is that we are dust; that we will someday die and stand before our Creator. Are we ready for that close encounter? Lent is a time to make sure we are indeed ready. Let us pray, fast and give alms as if our life depended on it. Which indeed it does!
“Our parish reconciliation service for Most Pure Heart will be this Thursday. Fr. Phil Neikamp will be with us. This early-in-Lent date gives us a chance to clear out our sins so as to more productively use this season and prepare for the coming season of Easter. I’ll arrange a service at Assumption for sometime next month.
“These next couple of weeks should be a special time of prayer for Pope Benedict XVI; in thanksgiving for his service, his leadership, his wisdom and theology which he has given to the Church all of his priesthood. We pray too for the conclave which will elect the next pope. May the Holy Spirit guide and protect the Church at this time.”...Fr. Dave

Lenten Pastoral Letter
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The 40 Days of Lent which begin Ash Wednesday, February 13th, during the Year of Faith, are marked by prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  These days bring us to the threshold of the heart of the Church’s year, the Paschal Triduum.  These are retreat days in which we recall during these next six weeks with renewed devotion our sharing in the saving death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.  The Church in her wisdom and love for us sets aside these 40 Days to help us understand, celebrate and focus on the Lord’s death and resurrection worthily to renew our participation in this mystery by our baptism, and to make amends for our sins through penance.  We are invited to have a true spirit of conversion, renewing our faith in the divine mercy of God and the power of grace in our lives.
In a special manner this year, Pope Benedict asks us to exercise the virtue of charity in our thoughts and deeds.  Operation Rice Bowl is a wonderful opportunity to extend charity to our brothers and sisters who are in need across the globe.
I wish to assure you and your family of my prayerful support and encouragement during these Lenten days.  I ask the Lord to give you grace to deepen your willingness to follow him with an even greater charitable heart.
With my best wishes and personal regards, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ…Most Reverend John R. Gaydos, Bishop of Jefferson City
