Text Box: “With the warm days we’ve had, I’m sure everyone is feeling like spring, but it’s still only February. Still it’s time to begin thinking about spring and all that will bring. Of course, spring means Lent (and Lent means ‘spring’). Since it’s a little later than usual this year, (Ash Wednesday – March 9) we don’t want to forget about this important time in the Church’s life (and ours). So it’s not too early to begin thinking about this coming season. Are we ready to enter into a more intense time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving? Are we ready to ‘examine our conscience’, to turn away from sin, and to do penance. Are we ready to once again walk with Our Lord as he carries His cross to Calvary. This is the important work of Lent. Fish frys, seafood buffets and spring dinners are also important activities, but let’s not loose sight of what is of ultimate importance – our life of faith with God. Let all that we do work toward and promote that end.
“This past week was World Day for the Sick. We want to celebrate the Sacrament of the Healing of the Sick with everyone who is experiencing sickness or disease in their life or who needs healing, and so have decided to offer that sacrament on Saturday and Sunday March 5/6 with communal anointing at the Masses that weekend. It will give all of us a chance to pray together for all our family and friends who are sick or suffering.
“Also on Sunday afternoon March 6, being the last Sunday before Lent, we’ll be having a little ‘Mardi Gras’ pot-luck supper/gathering. So hope you can gather together for a little fun and games, before the serious work of Lent begins.
     “God bless.”...Fr. Dave

Actions Requested on Important Issues

The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 3) would establish a permanent, government-wide prohibition on federal subsidies for abortion and for health plans that cover abortion (with narrow exceptions). This would supersede the patchwork of abortion-related limitations that have been applied to various federal programs over the past 35 years and more - many of which require annual renewal to remain in effect.  MO Right to Life encourages you to contact your congressmen and urge them to support H.R. 3.  Contact info: Senator Claire McCaskill 202-224-6154 email at http://mccaskill.senate.gov, Senator Roy Blunt 202-224-5721 email at http://blunt.senate.gov, U.S. Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer 202-225-2956 email at  http://luetkemeyer.house.gov.

Federal Policies on Abortion - The Pro-Life Office at the Chancery has requested that you contact your U.S. representative (Blaine Luetkemeyer 202-225-2956 email at  http://luetkemeyer.house.gov, fax 202-225-5712, mailing address 1740 Longworth, House Office Bldg,, Washington, DC 20515).  Message: “Please support the Protect Life Act, HR 358 which will amend the health care reform law to preserve longstanding federal policies on abortion and conscience rights.”

Prayer Amendments Introduced in MO House and Senate - Legislation to protect the religious freedoms of Missourians has once again been filed in both chambers of the MO General Assembly. The proposed amendment to Missouri's Constitution would ensure that citizens and school children have the right to pray and acknowledge God in public settings.  MO Family Policy Council encourages you to contact your state legislators to urge their support for the proposed prayer amendment (Joint Resolution 2) to the Missouri Constitution.  Contact info: Representative Tom Loehner 573-751-1344 email Tom.Loehner@house.mo.gov; Senator Dan Brown 573-751-5713 email Dan.Brown@senate.mo.gov.

Spring Dinner News - St. Mary’s Spring Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, March 27.  If you would like to  make a raffle prize donation or a cash prize donation, please contact Teresa Skaggs 763-5403 or Lori Hagenhoff 763-5485.  Anyone wishing to volunteer to be the 3rd person on the chairing committee, please contact Teresa Skaggs.  Also, meat donations are being accepted and can be dropped in the collection basket in an envelope marked “Spring Dinner meat donation” or given to one of the Spring Dinner chairpersons.  Thank you!

Rock-Climbing, Being Outdoors, Campfires, Float Trips... can you see yourself doing these things with other high school guys who also want to grow in their masculine spirituality? Join us for Camp Maccabee (which is for young men currently in 8th grade through juniors in high school) this summer July 24-28. More info and registration materials are available at the parish office or by calling the youth ministry office or vocation office at the Chancery at 573-635-9127 or download the forms at www.discoverthepriesthood.org.

Text Box: Keep in Your Prayers the five Confirmation students as they prepare for this special sacrament (which will take place March 23 at St. George in Linn).

Stewardship Quote - In another passage from his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus continues to turn his disciples' way of thinking upside down. One of the lessons for the Christian steward in today's Gospel is that if we have a chance to help someone in need, we should be generous and give more than is expected of us. Jesus went "the extra mile" for us. Can we be more like Jesus and "go the extra mile" for others?

Ladies, mark your calendars! - The annual Ladies Luncheon will be held on Sunday, March 20.  Details forthcoming.

Vocation Blurb - God does not call the equipped, He equips the called. Visit www.discoverthepriesthood.org to learn more.
