“Lent! Our season of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and sacrifice! Will we take advantage of this time and at least try to do something special this Lent? Why is this important? As you know, Lent has two main themes – Repentance for the first weeks, and then Christ’s passion as we approach Holy Week. These are related. We repent because Christ has redeemed us. Christ had to come and redeem us because we were sinners. If we wish to share in Christ’s saving action, we must make the decision to live for Him. It is an important decision in our life. If we are not growing closer to Christ this Lent, we are growing apart. Let’s do the right thing and live for Christ.”…Fr. Dave

Bishop’s Lenten Pastoral Letter
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On Ash Wednesday, we embarked once again on a solemn journey through these forty days of Lent. As we hear in the Gospel for this First Sunday of Lent, Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted. The Spirit prompts us to go along with him, to face our own temptations and conquer them with help of God’s grace. Pope Francis points out that one of the biggest temptations to be overcome is an attitude of indifference. If things are going well for us, there is a tendency to forget about our need for God, and to lose touch with those who are suffering. The Lord was never indifferent toward his Father or to the struggles of humanity. The Lenten ascetical practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving help us to imitate Christ in this way, by turning our focus back to love of God and our neighbor.
I wish to assure you and your family of my prayerful support during these days of Lent, and invite you to pray with me for the return of those who have drifted away from the faith. It is my hope that all of us will take the opportunity to experience the tender forgiveness of God this Lent, and be renewed in heart and soul.
With my best wishes and personal regards, I am
