Text Box: After being here these few months, I wanted to make just a few reflections on our Sunday Liturgy. It is the most important thing that we do each week, both as individual Catholics, and as a community. I am most impressed at the readers who both read so well and take the time for a moment of silence after each reading. Our liturgy, while it is primarily a communal celebration, that is something we do together, it should also have times of quiet for personal prayer and reflection. One of the longest times that the Church reserves for you and your personal prayer is at the offertory. The church instructs the priest to say the prayers over the bread and wine ‘softly’ (though they may be said ‘aloud’). I think the intention is to give the congregation this time for personal reflection and prayer having just heard the Sacred Scriptures and now preparing to celebrate the Eucharist. Yes, there must be time for your offering and it is probably a ‘greater good’ to join together in singing, but you should also have a little time for just you and the Lord. You may even close your eyes and just be with your Lord, until the prayer ‘Pray Brethren’, at which time we stand. That was changed several years ago from standing only at your response, to standing at (or for) the ‘Pray Brethren’. So probably at that time someone desiring not to be late encouraged you to stand before the Pray Brethren, but then it became after the washing of hands, then during the washing of hands, and it seems as if now people are standing even before the washing of hands. Standing is a sign of something important going on. We stand at the Gospel because it is the Good News about Jesus Christ, we would stand if the Pope or Bishop came into a room and so on. The washing of hands at the offertory is NOT important and there is no need to stand before it, during, or afterwards. There is no need to guess when father will have his book in place and the altar ready, or if he will be using incense or some other preparation. You may remain seated and in your private communion with the Lord until you hear the invitation ‘Pray Brethren’, at which time all stand - as we are nearing something most important – the Eucharistic Prayer. It is at the Eucharistic Prayer that you should have your eyes fixed intently on the priest and altar. It is then that something is really happening – bread is becoming the Body of our Lord, wine is becoming his blood. Look intently on the miracle taking place before you. You know the words, there is no need to be looking at the missallette at that time.
“Next week – the second time given for your personal prayers.
“The Parish Meeting we had the other week recognized that we need to keep up with the computer age, and said we should have a website and other presence on the web. So I have begun and we have a website and two domains:www.MostPureHeart.organdwww.AssumptionMorrison.org. So if you want to take a look and make suggestions, or, better, if you would like to help and know ‘Dreamweaver’ then let me know.”...Fr. Dave
