Catholic Home Missions Collection - This year, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal turns its focus to youth ministry, an essential component of the life and vibrancy of the Church. In youth ministry programs, young Catholics grow in faith and gain valuable leadership skills. Without this appeal, poorer dioceses in the United States cannot sustain vital youth programs. Next weekend we will take up a collection for this appeal. Please be generous and help strengthen the Church at home.  Please check your contribution envelope packet for the special envelope for this collection.

Grandparents/Senior Citizens Breakfast - The Osage R-1 School District is hosting a Grandparents/Senior Citizens Breakfast, Monday, April 26, 2010, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Classrooms can be visited afterwards. The music program will begin at 8:45 in the gym. All are invited. Please call the school at 763-5446 to place your reservation!

Text Box: April Funfest - Do you have stiffness in your joints when you get up in the morning? Do you have pain in your lower back? Have you ever been told you have some arthritis in a joint or two?  All invited, Assumption and Most Pure Heart of Mary, to the Wednesday, April 28, Funfest.  Kay Day, who teaches an exercise class at Linn State Technical College, will be our speaker. She, also, is assisting the committee in providing a special luncheon after her presentation. So please come after a very light lunch and with a determination to improve your gait and your balance. Handouts will be provided.

Text Box: The Mass of Thanksgiving for our new Renovations of Most Pure Heart of Mary Church is fast approaching. It will be on Sunday morning May 2 at 9:00 am. (Please note that it is an hour later than our usual schedule so as to allow guests and Bishop Gaydos a little more time to get here.) We will be blessing the church, thanking all who make it possible, and also celebrating those who received sacraments here. So please take a moment to fill out the little form at the end of the bulletin’s second page and return it as soon as possible, next week at the latest. We will end with a May Crowning procession around the church to our statue of Mary out front. Any children who would like to help lead the procession, please let us know ASAP also. If walking and standing will be too much for anyone, you are welcome to bring lawn chairs. That’s a good idea anyway! I’d like the choir to get together on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm to prepare a special song for our celebration.
“The following week we’ll be having a brunch for our graduates. Congratulations to all of them. It is also Mother’s Day, and Mass on Saturday evening and Sunday morning will be in honor/remembrance of our mothers. We have a supply of Mother’s Day cards in the back if you would like one to send to your living mother. If you would like her to be remembered in our Mass, there is a Mass offering envelope in your May contribution envelope packet for any mothers you would like remembered at that Mass. Please return them in the collection or to the office at least by the week before Mother’s Day, by May 2.
“At our parish gathering, we decided to have a Corpus Christi Procession on June 6th. We will process around our towns with the Monstrance, stopping at several altars for benediction. Morrison also agreed to do a procession, so we are thinking of ways of doing a motor procession from here to there. If you would like to help plan and execute this, we’ll have a meeting on Tuesday evening May 4, 7:00 pm here at St. Mary’s - and more information after that.
“We also confirmed the parish picnic for July 25 at the park again this year. Rob Schollmeyer agreed to be chairman again. Let’s plan a planning meeting for June 1 to get things rolling and all get behind this to make it a big success.
“We thank Henry Nolte for bringing several maintenance needs to our attention and his willingness to get them taken care of.”...Fr. Dave

My dear friends in Christ,

Next weekend, Catholic parishes across the country will take up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Nearly half of the dioceses in the U.S. are considered home missions. Most of them rural, they do not have enough priests or enough resources to provide the most basic pastoral services. They need help from Catholics in places where the Church is financially stronger and they get it through the Home Mission Appeal.
In the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, a grant from the Home Missions helped nine rural parishes remain open. The funds help pay salaries for priests, pastoral assistants, and office staff. In the Diocese of Salt Lake City, the appeal supported nine seminarians desperately needed in the sprawling diocese that covers the entire state of Utah.
From Alaska to Appalachia, grants from the Catholic Home Missions are subsidizing ministries of word, worship, and services for American Catholics who can least afford them. Our own Diocese has been blessed with a grant to expand our outreach to the growing Hispanic population. While we as a Diocese contributed $60,000 to the Home Missions last year, we got $70,000 back.
The Catholic Home Mission Appeal is based on a cherished tradition of both our Church and our country, of people who have helping those who do not. As we continue to recover from the economic downturn, it is important to remember our Catholic brothers and sisters in the U.S. whose dioceses are fragile even in the best of time. Rich and poor, donor and recipient, working together we can strengthen the Church at home.

Sincerely yours in Christ
Most Reverend John R. Gaydos, Bishop of Jefferson City
