Mandate for Birth Control and Sterilization - The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement on July 19 opposing the Institute of Medicine's recommendation to the Department of Health and Human Services that contraception and sterilization be mandated services covered under all insurance plans in the U.S.  Conscience protection for religious organizations such as dioceses and hospitals that provide insurance to their employees is essential to protect their religious liberty. The "Respect for Rights of Conscience Act" bill (HR 1179) would ensure conscience protection for religious institutions and individuals in the health care law.  MO Catholic Conference urges all citizens to contact Senator Claire McCaskill (202-224-6154 email at http://mccaskill.senate.gov), Senator Roy Blunt (202-224-5721 email at http://blunt.senate.gov), and U.S. Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer (202-225-2956 email at  http://luetkemeyer.house.gov.) to encourage them to support HR 1179.

? Of the Week - In your experience, what “false obstacles” have you or people you know experienced, separating them from Christ?  Divorce?  Not attending Mass?  Others?

Stewardship Quote - In today's Gospel we find an equation the disciples of Jesus couldn't solve:  Five loaves and two fish divided by 5,000-plus people. They failed to recognize Jesus in the equation; that whatever they had to offer, Jesus could take it and bless it and satisfy the hunger of the crowd with it. Good stewards recognize that the Lord can work miracles with the gifts they offer to a hungry and broken world. How often are we willing to offer our gifts in faith, even as insignificant as we think they are, and count on the Lord to do the rest? How often do we count Christ into the equation?

Why Natural Family Planning? - Natural Family Planning (NFP) helps to provide better marriages and strengthens faith and family life. Couples report that they learn to communicate more fully and creatively with each other. Practice of NFP builds mutual respect for each other, as persons to be loved and gifts of God to be appreciated. It is a natural way to postpone or achieve pregnancy based on awareness of a woman’s body signs. NFP is for couples who are currently married and those planning for marriages.  For more info, contact prolife@diojeffcity.org.

On Mission in India - The Foundation for Children in Need in India has made mission appeals in parishes across our diocese and parishioners everywhere have responded generously. In gratitude, the foundation has offered to host a mission immersion group from the diocese in February, 2012. The foundation (www.fcnindia.org) works in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southeastern India, ministering to the medical, educational, and other basic needs of the poor. Participants will spend two weeks visiting projects, meeting the people they serve, and encountering some of the great culture and history that is India. For more information, contact Mark Saucier in the Mission Office at 573-635-9127 or msaucier@diojeffcity.org.
